MIRALAX AND DULCOLAX BOWEL PREP FOR COLONOSCOPY

**** Please bring a driver, Driver’s License, insurance cards, and a full list of all current daily medications with you to registration the morning of the procedure. Leave your valuables and jewelry at home, including all body piercing.

To prepare

You will need these items from a pharmacy:

  • Miralax (8.3 ounces or 238 grams);
  • 8 Dulcolax or Bisacodyl tablets (5 milligram tablets).
  • 2 fleet enemas
  • There may be store brands of these products that cost less. Ask the pharmacist to help you find what you need.
  • Buy a large 64-ounce bottle of sports drink such as Gatorade/ PowerAde
  • Arrange to have an adult bring you to your appointment and take you home after your test.
  • If you have diabetes, buy a no or low calorie drink such as Crystal Light instead. This will be used to mix with your Miralax the day before your test. Do not use carbonated beverages.
  • Avoid all reds, pinks and purples.

3 days before your test

Do Not eat any nuts, seeds and popcorn, Corn. Any green vegetables, or fruits or vegetables with skins or hulls,(ex. Greens, salad, green beans, Grapes, apple peelings, corn etc.).

2 days before your test

After your evening meal about 6 or 7 pm take 4 dulcolax tablets

After which this will start your clear liquid diet.

On the day before your test

  1. Drink only clear liquids. Avoid all red, pink or purple colored liquids.
  2. Do not eat any solid food or milk products until your test is done.

Clear Liquid: NO RED, PINK OR PURPLE

  • Gatorade, Powerade NO Red, Pink or Purple
  • Clear broth or bouillon (beef, chicken or Vegetable
  • Coffee or tea (no milk or non-dairy creamer)
  • Carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks
  • Kool-Aid or other fruit-flavored drinks
  • Strained fruit juices (no pulp) (apple or White grape)
  • Jell-O no fruit, popsicles, hard candy (no red or purple) Ginger-Ale, sprite

Not Clear Liquid:

  • No red, pink or purple items of any kind
  • No alcohol
  • No milk or non dairy creamers
  • No noodles or vegetables in soup
  • No juice with pulp
  • No liquid you cannot see through

** Diabetic Gatorade G2 Powerade Zero, Crystal light, Diet soda, Sugarfee jello and sugarfree popsicles

  • If you have diabetes, buy a no or low calorie drink such as Crystal Light instead. This will be used to mix with your Miralax the day before your test. Do not use carbonated beverages.
  • IF YOU ARE A DIABETIC TAKE ONLY HALF OF YOUR DIABETIC MEDICATION THE DAY BEFORE THE PROCEDURE. DO NOT TAKE ANY DIABETIC MEDICATION THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE.

2. Follow the schedule in the table below for your bowel prep. You may need to get to the toilet right away. You will have many bowel movements through the day. They will become very watery. The bowels are clear or clean when there is only pale yellow fluid without flecks of stool.

  1. At 2:00 PM Take 2 Dulcolax tablets with a drink of clear liquids.
  2. 3:00 PM Mix the Miralax in a 64-ounce bottle of Gatorade or other clear liquid of choice. Cap the bottle and shake the bottle to dissolve the powder. Start to drink ½ of the Miralax. Drink one glass every 10 to 15 minutes until you have drunk 32oz. Finish drinking the liquid in 1 hour.
  3. At 7:00 pm Take the last 2 Dulcolax tablets.
  4. Remember to drink all day to keep hydrated.
  5. 8:00 pm Drink the remaining ½ of the Miralax drink. Drink one glass every 10 to 15 minutes until you have drunk 32oz. Finish drinking the liquid in 1 hour.

Do not eat or drink anything after 12 midnight.

The morning of the colonoscopy

An essential part of your preparing for your procedure is the Fleet enema. You must administer the Fleet enema rectally according to the easy-to-follow instructions that comes with the enema.

Administer the 2 enemas the morning of your surgery/procedure two (2) hours before leaving for the hospital.

  • You will need to take blood pressure medication, arrhythmia medication, seizure medication and breathing medication, (including inhalers), as early as possible the morning of the procedure with a small of a sip of water. Bring with you - Diabetic medication and inhalers for possible use after procedure.
  • Bring a complete list of all medications with you to the procedure.
  • The Surgery Center will call and give you an arrival time and any other instructions
  • If you have additional insurance coverage questions please call your insurance company.

NO SHOWS AND CANCELLATIONS WITHOUT 72 HOUR NOTICE WILL BE CHARGED A FEE OF $200
