Please correct the errors described below.

STAT®️ is excited to offer Equine Assisted Learning Programs & Workshops for children and adolescents.

These grant-funded programs support youth with developmental, physical, emotional, or behavioral disabilities, as well as those who are neurodivergent, adopted, or in foster care. We also serve children and teens living in group homes, shelters, or residential care facilities due to homelessness, family instability, or psychological treatment needs—youth who face significant challenges but are not court-involved.

Through safe, hands-on experiences with horses, participants gain confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. Guided by trauma-informed equine professionals trained in national best-practice models, sessions provide trust, empowerment, and healing in a non-judgmental environment—helping each child grow stronger, more self-aware, and hopeful about their future.

STAT® Equine Assisted Learning Program Options

STAT®'s EQuine Affect®: Equine Learning and Activities Program

STAT® Inc Staff, Cat Markosky (CEO) and Mel Jenkins-Fernandez, Psy.D., created the EQuine Affect® (EQA), which is an innovative ground-based (no riding) program for your child or teen to learn alongside horses and experience connecting with horses and others through structured, fun, and safe activities. STAT® Inc provides programming for your child or teen to learn alongside horses and experience connecting with horses through structured, fun, and safe activities. Our Team approach includes EQA trained facilitators (i.e., with mental health backgrounds and multiple training modalities to include EAGALA, OK Corral, and EquiLateral to name a few) to provide emotionally safe ways to learn without the pressure to be perfect and Equine Specialists to ensure physical safety of both people and horses. This is a ground based program. We embrace learning from a growth mindset to try new things and explore solutions with confidence.

The six week class may include topics ranging from:

The EQuine Affect® provides opportunities to explore emotional intelligence "EQ" with self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management based upon psychologist Dr. Daniel Goleman's four domains of EQ.

  • The EQuine Affect® provides opportunities to explore emotional intelligence "EQ" in a six week program based upon the work of Dr. Carol Dweck to explore Mindset challenges, obstacles, effort, criticism, success of others, and the power of yet for a1-hour for individuals or in a small group.

What to expect after submitting the application:

A staff member will either call or email you to set up a brief telephone screening. In some cases, an applicant's need may exceed our programming, extend into additional weeks, and we may also suggest another agency. After an applicant is accepted into the program, the parent/guardian will be sent a portal link to set-up an account in STAT®'s Theranest and electronically sign the permission form and waiver documents along with program fee payment* if indicated. As part of grant funded programs, we do ask participants to complete various anonymous surveys and inventories, which helps improve our programs and also demonstrate effectiveness.

What to Expect After Submitting the Application:

Once your application is received, a staff member will contact you by phone or email to schedule a brief screening call. This helps us ensure that STAT®’s programs are the right fit for your child; if a participant’s needs are better met elsewhere, we may suggest a more appropriate agency.

If accepted, guardians will receive a secure portal link through STAT®’s Theranest system to create an account, sign consent and waiver forms electronically, and submit program fee payment*. Because many of our programs are grant-funded, participants may also be asked to complete brief, anonymous surveys. These surveys help us improve our services and demonstrate the effectiveness of our programs.

Why is there an application fee?

STAT® Inc. is a nonprofit charity supported primarily through grants and donations. While grants help cover some program expenses, they rarely include the day-to-day costs of caring for our horses or providing essentials for participants. Application fees go directly toward program delivery—covering the horses’ basic, medical, dental, supplement, and farrier needs, as well as snacks, water, and activity supplies for participants.

Providing high-quality equine-assisted services is costly, but we work hard to minimize expenses without ever compromising the care of our participants or our horses. Our dedicated staff often donate their time to give back to the community, and your support through this fee helps us make these life-changing programs possible.
